Duties and Responsibilities
Supports the university’s fundamental commitment to the highest standards of ethics, integrity and conduct while leading tax and reporting compliance efforts, working closely with university financial staff and the Office of Legal Affairs. Oversees a staff of two, prepares tax filings and develops, applies and interprets university tax policies and procedures to ensure tax compliance with federal, state, local and foreign rules, regulations and requirements. Ensures the implementation and management of appropriate safeguards for tax compliance, as well as, compliance with tax reporting requirements. Communicates with taxing authorities on behalf of the university, as necessary.

Graduate degree in tax or related discipline and/or active Certified Public Accountant licensure. Seven years working experience in the field of tax compliance. Four years of progressively more responsible tax management experience, to include payroll benefits, and employment tax issues; Five years supervisory experience; Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations for 501©(3) and not for profit tax compliance, compensation and benefits, employment rules and sales and other tax issues; Ability to organize, analyze and interpret financial data and regulatory rules to communicate expectations and enforce policy to the broader campus community. High degree of integrity and professionalism, and strong interpersonal communication skills in order to effectively deliver presentations to a diverse constituency. Experience at a research-focused university or other large, complex, not-for-profit organization. Strong knowledge of unrelated business income tax.

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or other job-related discipline. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of the tax function. Strong technical tax knowledge, research skills, and proven ability to apply and communicate that knowledge. Knowledge of not-for-profit, corporate, partnership, governmental, and other entity types regarding tax structures, issues, and return preparation. Knowledge of unrelated business income tax and private use rules. Experience in tax return preparation, including not-for-profit organization returns. Effective interpersonal skills and ability to deal credibly and effectively with senior institutional leadership. Effective written, oral, and electronic communication skills. Strong computer skills including a high competency with Microsoft Excel and automated financial systems. Advanced analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills and the ability to effectively summarize and present information; Experience with ERP systems such as Peoplesoft.
