Duties and Responsibilities
As a member of the Web Development and Operations team within University Marketing, the ideal Senior Front-End Web Developer candidate serves as the technical expert and leader responsible for the front-end engineering and development of all public and internally facing Marketing products including websites, web applications, and underpinning technologies.
A vital team member focused on scalable and high-quality solutions, this position plays a key role in leading the creation, delivery, maintenance, and evolution of digital experiences within a fast-moving marketing environment; Advises, consults, and partners with Marketing team colleagues, including full-stack developers, UX/UI designers, project managers, strategists and writers; Has demonstrable knowledge and expertise creating websites and/or applications with modern web technologies (HTML/CSS/JavaScript); Understands and has experience implementing front-end code within CMS (content management system) applications (Drupal, etc.); Is able to work across a variety of projects of varying complexity and code structures; Is able to deliver semantic, well organized code based upon business and systems requirements; Is well-versed in modern web best-practices and is able to identify emerging trends and technologies; Has an eye for detail and a willingness to dissect and proactively solve diverse development challenges while utilizing commonly accepted methodologies and university policies governing security and accessibility; Exhibits the behaviors associated with the Office of Advancement’s core competencies: Leadership, Continuous Improvement, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Communication/Interpersonal Effectiveness.
Position Requirements
50%: Lead front-end web development of user-facing websites according to business requirements in high collaboration across University Marketing with project managers, strategists, copywriters, designers, and other developers as well as technology partners across campus or external vendors where required.
30%: Support day-to-day maintenance of existing production websites and web-based applications. Audit, optimize, and debug front-end code (In emergencies, this may include evenings, weekends, or holidays.)
15%: Mentor team members to promote best practices on high-quality front-end web development standards, web accessibility and security. Remain current with emerging technologies, best practices, and methodologies while evaluating their potential use to advance the mission of University Marketing.
5%: Other duties as assigned
Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; 6 years of progressive experience developing websites; 3 years of experience writing responsive, semantically-sound code for web experiences, using HTML5 and CSS (i.e. SASS, LESS); Demonstrated expert proficiency using semantic markup and manipulating the DOM; Understanding of progressive enhancement and mobile first design concepts; Experience leveraging responsive frameworks such as Bootstrap or Foundation; Professional work experience with enterprise web content management systems, such as Drupal (preferred), WordPress, ModX, Sitecore; Experience creating web sites that are accessible to users who require assistive technologies; Professional work experience developing with JavaScript and JS frameworks, such as jQuery; Demonstrated strong communication skills, both oral and written, especially in communication with non-technical colleagues
Desired:
Professional experience building front end component libraries and/or style guides; Professional work experience with Drupal development, including theming; Successful experience creating ADA compliant websites to Section 508 and/or WCAG 2.0 compliance standards; Successful work experience with web service technologies such as REST, JSON, or XML; Professional work experience with code versioning and management tools, such as Git; Familiarity with a back-end web technology (PHP preferred); Experience using and integrating vector and motion graphics, including SVG, HTML5 Canvas, and Animation via JavaScript and CSS; Experience working within a marketing environment.
