Duties and Responsibilities

The Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet) invites applications for the position of Executive Director. The Executive Director (ED), working collaboratively with the Chancellor and staff of (ODHE) and the Senior Vice President for Research at The Ohio State University, has the responsibility for overseeing OARnet.

The ED directs all OARnet activities, oversees network operations and client services, supervises the senior management team and indirectly manages a total staff of approximately 60. The ED oversees planning and an annual budget in excess of $26 million. The ED is responsible for providing clients with a production-based networking environment with emphasis on 24/7/365 dependability, quality, and responsiveness, competitive pricing and added-value services.

This position is directly responsible for the management of the network providing Internet and supercomputer connectivity to approximately 90 higher education institutions in the state of Ohio, public schools, libraries, state of Ohio agencies, other activities supported by ODHE, and (under special conditions) nonprofit and commercial clients. The ED coordinates with the ODHE, OH-TECH, state agencies, and university partners on technology policies and shared service development; expands external funding options by seeking association, nonprofit and private opportunities and develops statewide teams to respond to major, federal research opportunities.

The ED assists research staff in obtaining grants for high-performance networking research and provides leadership and participation in national forums, committees and discussions, representing OARnet in national bodies such as the Quilt. The ED provides administrative oversight of the Ohio Valley Internet2 Consortium (OVI2C) in collaboration with the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID) and Internet2.

The ED is often required to be accessible via phone when not in the office and have Internet access to perform certain work duties from home. Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Required

  • Master's degree in a technical field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 10 years of work experience in a networking or related field with a minimum of five years of managerial experience including responsibility for budgeting and personnel, preferably in an academic environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Extensive working knowledge of the Internet, telecommunications, personnel, and budget management.
  • Must have strong collaboration skills and ability to communicate openly with academic and state agency clients as partners.
