Duties and Responsibilities
Student Life Disability Services is a department that provides academic support services for OSU students with disabilities. The Braille Transcriber is responsible for producing, coordinating, and delivering appropriate braille and tactile image services; transcribes and embosses a broad range of course materials (e.g. textbooks, notes, slides, homework, articles, exams) into Literary and Mathematics Braille, as well as produces associated tactile images; provides training/information and direction to student employee, production staff and additional service providers; self-directs in terms of time management, prioritization of work duties and appropriate responses to constantly evolving concerns and situations, and exhibits great attention to detail; keeps current with all new changes and developments in the field of higher education as applicable to functions assigned, with an emphasis in braille and tactile image production.
Position Requirements
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution; Library of Congress certification in Literary Braille Transcribing and Proofreading; Library of Congress certification in Mathematics Braille Transcribing and Proofreading (Nemeth Code and Science Notation); 1 to 2 years’ experience creating and troubleshooting accurate accessible electronic text, tactile materials, and braille (Literary and Mathematics).
Desired:
Significant experience producing accurate Literary and Mathematics Braille documents and associated tactile images at the undergraduate and/or graduate level in advanced STEM subjects, including but not limited to math, economics, statistics, and chemistry, as well as Foreign Languages; experience in transcribing Unified English Braille (UEB); certification in Orientation and Mobility; strong written and verbal communication skills.
