Duties and Responsibilities

The Associate General Counsel will provide legal advice and services in the areas of tax, estate and charitable planning, trusts, probate, and gift initiatives, with a particular dedication to the University’s advancement office. The Associate General Counsel will draft, negotiate, review and provide leadership and advice on a wide range of Advancement matters, including: gift agreements, grant agreements, gift processing, endowment modifications and other administrative practices; integral involvement with complex charitable giving instruments such as charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities, non-cash gifts, donor advised funds and related issues; assisting University employees carrying out the corporate and other work of The Ohio State University Foundation; managing trust and estate litigation matters;

Position Requirements

The Associate General Counsel will also provide legal advice and services on various tax law areas such as unrelated business income tax (UBIT), qualified sponsorships, property tax, sales tax, excise tax, tax exemption and nonprofit laws (including Form 990 and 990-T reporting), taxes related to alternative investments, and other university tax issues. Responsibilities will also include conducting legal research and analysis, drafting agreements and recommending policies and procedures to promote tax compliance, and the implementation of other duties and special projects, as assigned by leadership in the Office of Legal Affairs.

The Associate General Counsel will draft, negotiate, review and provide leadership and advice on a wide range of Advancement matters, including: gift agreements, grant agreements, gift processing, endowment modifications and other administrative practices; integral involvement with complex charitable giving instruments such as charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities, non-cash gifts, donor advised funds and related issues; assisting University employees carrying out the corporate and other work of The Ohio State University Foundation; managing trust and estate litigation matters.

Required Experience

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have graduated from an accredited law school and be a member of the Ohio bar or eligible to practice law in the State of Ohio within one year or less. A minimum of 6 years of legal practice is required. Significant previous legal experience with complex estate planning, charitable giving, and tax law practice for universities and/or nonprofits is highly desired.
